Police Employment Opportunities
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- 18 years of Age
- Valid Driver's License
- No Felony Convictions
- Misdemeanor arrest and/or convictions may not automatically disqualify a candidate. These issues are considered on a case by case basis, in the context of the persons age at the time, the amount of time that has passed, seriousness and other factors

- Internal Review Board (After Background is Complete)

- Conditional Offer of Employment
- Medical and Drug Screening
- Non-certified applicants - P.O.S.T. Form #2 (P2) must come back from P.O.S.T. in order to be given a start date

Benefits:
- Equipment: All equipment and uniforms provided by the department, including duty weapons. Each officer is assigned a patrol unit and allowed to take the unit home if the officer resides within 35 miles of the police department.
- Career Development: The Griffin Police Department maintains a proactive and aggressive training program. This program includes Radar, Laser, and all of the POST Intermediate and Advanced requirements being taught, by our instructors, in our classroom. Additional advanced/specialty training is offered through the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and other regional academies in our area. At our department, you will be encouraged to complete your undergraduate and graduate degrees.
- Vacation and Annual Leave: Employees earn paid vacation time at a rate based upon years of service.
- 0-5 years = 80 hours earned annually
- 6-15 years = 120 hours earned annually
- 16+ years = 160 hours earned annually
- Sick Leave: Employees earn 96 hours per year.
- Holidays: Employees enjoy 11 paid holidays per year
- Civil Leave: Time off with pay is provided to employees subpoenaed to jury duty or to appear before any public body or commission.
- Medical, Dental and Prescription Coverage: The City of Griffin provides group insurance to its employees and their families at a minimal cost to the employee.
- Life Insurance: The City of Griffin provides life insurance to its employees at a rate of one and a half times the employee's annual salary at no cost to the employee. Additional life insurance is offered at a reasonable rate to the employee.
- Long Term Disability: Provided at no charge to the employee
- Pension Plan: Employees participate in the GMEBS retirement plan in which the City contributes 18% per payroll. Vesting is at 10 years of service.
- Retirement: The City offers a 457b Retirement plan allowing an employee to make pre-tax contributions to a retirement plan.

Starting Salary:
- $15.54/hr - non-certified officers
- $21.75/hr-$23.92/hr based on training and experience - Georgia POST certified officers
Officers will receive starting salary of $21.75 upon graduation from Georgia POST Certified Police Academies.
Disqualification:
The Griffin Police Department strives to obtain the best qualified candidates to work in the department. As a result, there are specific issues that would disqualify applicants from obtaining employment with our agency. The list includes, but is not limited to;
- Not being a U.S. Citizen
- Falsification or deception during the hiring process. Any material misstatement of fact or significant admission during the application or background process, including inconsistent statements made during the panel interview, supplemental questionnaire, polygraph/voice stress examination or any other interviews or investigations conducted during the process
- Any forgery, alteration, or intentional omission of material fact on an official employment application document
- Any disciplinary discharge from the military
- Missing any scheduled appointment during the process without prior permission
- Having been disciplined by any employer for acts constituting racial, ethnic or sexual harassment or discrimination
- Being involuntarily terminated from two or more employers, as an adult
- Possession or use of marijuana within the past two years
- Felony drug possession or use
- Any use of illegal drug or possession while employed in any law enforcement capacity including military police
- Manufacturing, cultivating or sale of a drug or illegal substance
- Sale of marijuana
- Not successfully passing an employment drug screen
- Any illegal or unauthorized use of prescription medications
- Commission of a felony offense within the past five years
- Conviction of a felony offense
- Conviction of a misdemeanor offense(s) (non-traffic related) within the past three years
- Conviction of two or more misdemeanors (non-traffic related)
- Conviction of a misdemeanor (non-traffic related) while employed as a Law Enforcement Officer
- Admissions of any act of domestic violence as defined by law, committed as an adult
- Driver in two or more at fault collisions within the past three years
- Conviction of a DUI within the past five years or any two DUI convictions
- Three or more moving violations within the three years of application
- Unable to pass any tests required to perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer in the City of Griffin
- Unable to perform any of the duties outlined in the City of Griffin job description for Police Officer
