Message from the Director
The men and women of the City of Griffin Public Works Department are dedicated to providing you with the quality of government service you expect and deserve. It is my goal, as the Director of the Public Works Department to provide the highest quality public services to our citizens and other city departments, balanced through efforts to maintain a cost effective operation and to provide these services in a responsible and efficient manner. This is accomplished through the prudent use of resources, technology, innovations, teamwork, and coordination with other service providers in the city. I promise to always be available to our citizens, make decisions based on the greater good of our town, and never lose sight of the trust & responsibilities placed in me by this organization and the citizens of Griffin. I truly believe there is no greater cause than a life dedicated to public service, and I believe that should be reflected through our efforts every day. The divisions that encompass the public works department are responsible for rights-of-way management, traffic control and signage, project planning & design, maintaining parks, buildings & grounds, street construction & maintenance activities, fleet management services, Griffin Municipal Golf Course and Oak Hill Cemetery.

The City’s Public Works Department employees are committed to efficiently providing, operating, and maintaining public works infrastructure, facilities, and services to make everyday life as safe and convenient as possible for the public we serve. We encourage productivity in our daily activities by exhibiting pride and satisfaction with work, professional development, and competency. Our department seeks to maintain organizational alignment through loyalty and commitment of its employees, by showing mutual respect, open and honest communication, and teamwork. And lastly, achieving our effectiveness through accountability, creativity, innovation, leadership, and positive customer interactions with our citizens and other city departments.

Goals
The department’s broad goals were developed by the director, as a framework for programs and services carried out by the eight divisions, and represent the department’s ongoing commitment to our customers and partners. The goals are to:
- Provide a safe environment for our employees while ensuring safe passage for the traveling public
- Serve the public by providing the most cost effective, high quality service possible

In cases of an emergency, such as downed trees or structures across roadways, please call 911.
Division Responsibility
Directors Office
Planning, design, project management and construction of public improvements funded by the City as well as Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). Manage and oversee the daily operations of each public works division.
Traffic Signs
Design, fabricate, install and maintain an inventory of 5700 + regulatory & advisory signs for pedestrian and vehicular activity which includes installation of thermoplastic and maintenance of 120+ pedestrian crossings and 1000+ public parking places, and gathering and maintaining traffic and speed data on city streets.
Oak Hill Cemetery
The City of Griffin owns and maintains the largest cemetery in Spalding County. Founded by General Lewis Lawrence in 1840, Oak Hill Cemetery encompasses 125 acres, consisting of Old Oak Hill Cemetery, New Oak Hill Cemetery, Resthaven Cemetery, Stonewall Confederate Cemetery and a special military cemetery specifically for Veterans of Spalding County meeting specific residency criteria, along with their spouses, located in the interior of Oak Hill Cemetery. . There is also Veterans Memorial Park located across from the Stonewall Confederate Cemetery where an eternal flame has burned continuously since 1969, lighting monuments representing all periods of U.S. wars and conflicts line the park with the names of fallen local heroes in honor of our hometown veterans. As one of the oldest and most historic cemeteries in the area, Oak Hill Cemetery is full of interesting stories. Many of the names have become, or are still familiar to City of Griffin residents. Rich with history, Oak Hill Cemetery lies in the stories and legacies of all those buried here, including many founding pioneers and influential citizens. Services available:

Fleet Services
The City of Griffin’s Fleet Services Department manage, repair and maintain 750 pieces of rolling stock and equipment. Our mission is to provide high quality maintenance and repair services for safe and reliable vehicles, provide management information pertaining to each Department’s vehicles, and to insure all employees are made aware of safety protocols while working in and around each piece of equipment. The Department’s decisions are data-driven and aligned with the City’s mission and vision as well as complying with all applicable State, Federal and Local laws/rules/regulations and each employee will always act in a professional manner, with the best interest of the City in mind. Practices are in place so the Department operates in the most cost-efficient manner possible, all the while focusing on the customer’s (Department’s) needs for equipment necessary to provide the services critical to the operation of the City.
Street Maintenance
- Repair and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, rights-of-ways, and other related city grounds and facilities located within the corporate limits of Griffin
- 24-hour emergency response services during inclement weather, street tree trimming & removal, sweeping of city streets
- rights-of-way mowing & litter control, pothole repair, sidewalk installation and maintenance, landscape maintenance, & demolition of sub-standard buildings, are some of the task handled by this department.
Griffin Municipal Golf Course
Management of operations and maintenance of the city’s 18 hole municipal golf course. Opened for public play in 1932, our goal is to provide affordable recreation, in a beautiful, relaxed setting, for the citizens of Griffin and Spalding County, as well as neighboring communities. Rolling fairways and manicured Champion Bermuda greens highlight this par 72 course, locating directly in the heart of the City of Griffin’s medical district.
Facilities Maintenance
Facilities Maintenance focus is to provide a safe and pleasant environment in all city owned buildings. Staff is responsible for the planning, coordination, repair & renovation, custodial and maintenance services of all buildings owned by the City of Griffin, except where a particular department retains the responsibility. In addition to these duties on city facilities, staff also provides supervision of the city's contractor’s repair and renovation projects on public buildings owned by the City of Griffin.
